Aavesham - a Roller coaster

Fahadh Faasil has created absolute magic with his performance in his recent movie Aavesham. We've all heard his fanboys calling him the south Indian Marlon Brando or Al Pacino. But with this performance he showed what it would be like if Jim Carey acted in a gangster movie. The grace, the speed and the flamboyance, if a fan who've watched only his dramas like Maheshinte prathiharam or Njan prakashan watched aavesham, they wouldn't believe it's the same person.

The movie is written and directed by Jithu Madhavan. Though we've seen many movies with similar storylines, the fast screenplay definitely stands out. You might not be wondering what might happen next but the wacky and quirky screenplay which is waiting to show a bizzare scenario every 5 minutes will make you realise anything can happen in this universe. A college dean might have a gun in the book cabinet, you never know.

Let's talk about other characters. The three boys who play as college kids who are in need of a gangster excel in all their scenes. They have done a really good job in both emotional and humorous scenes. Mansoor Ali Khan should be avoided being cast as a cool gangster. It doesn't work anymore and his jokes never land nowadays. Other character worth mentioning is Amban, Fafa's right hand henchman, played by Sajin gopu. His slapstick humour and when he is playing dumb works like a charm.

Who should watch the movie?
Short answer - any movie watcher
Long answer :
Though Aavesham can be called as action humour, there are several moments that makes it a satirical comedy, meta cinema and it is very self aware. The brief episode where the boys feel they are in Ranga's (Fafa's character) hell is very well written. In the Guardians of the galaxy 2 or the Good place series the protagonists are taken into a so called paradise, but it ends up being the hell that is going to crumble on them eventually. A similar situation is written in aavesham so well, that even the audience feel claustrophobic.
The way Fafa plays the gangster character makes us doubt if any of this is happening or is it going to be called fake flashback in the end. An age old storyline feels like a cult classic because of Fafa's performance.
Anybody who is a fan of any kind of humour should definitely watch this film.

What's a mass entertainer and is Aavesham one?
A mass entertainer is like a text from your crush. It doesn't have to be real, doesn't need to make any sense but if it arrives you will go bonkers. That's how I felt about Aavesham, it made me forget rest of the world for 3 hours. It was set in Bangalore, nothing felt Bangalore'ish. It was a story about college kids in a co-ed college, but none of the female student had a single dialogue. But from the start to finish it is a fun ride and you just want to see more of it.
A roller coaster indeed.
